Hummingbird를 아시는가? 우리네 한국인들한테는 이름부터가 그닥 낯익은 새는 아니다. 벌새라고 하면 그냥 짐작은 가겠지만. 벌새라는이름이 풍겨내듯이, 벌처럼 작은 새다. 물론 진짜로 벌만큼 작은 새는 천만 아니고, 여러 종류의 Hummingbird가 있는 중에, 어떤 종은 길이 5cm 정도로 정말 작은 새도 있고, 기중 큰 새는 20cm가 넘는 종도 있기는 하다. 그러나 독특한 새요, Hummingbird에 관심을 갖다보면, 새라는 게,  ‘Hummingbird’와 ‘비 Hummingbird’로 구분되는 것이 아닐까, 생각이 거기까지 미치는 상당히 이채로운 새요, 특히 날갯짓하며 벌처럼 꿀을 따먹는 생태 하며, 대단히 매력적인 존재요, 그러면서도, 긴 부리로 동종의 Hummingbird를 죽이기도 하는 잔인한 케이스도 있고, 유독 North America와 South America에서만 발견되는 새가 Hummingbird다.

최복림 작가는, 늦깎이 시인으로 등단한 이후, 문학의 터전을 소설로 넓힌 천재작가다. 그것도 영문소설을 썼다. 언어문화적으로 성년이 다 된 동양인이 영어문화권에 와서 산다는 것은, 우선 언어적으로 말해서 ‘생존’의 차원에 편입하는 것부터가 쉽지 않다. 모두 경험하는 일이고. 하물며 문학작품을 만들어낸다는 것은 역시 언어적으로 말하면 ‘생활’의 차원을 뛰어넘어, 맛을 낸다는 얘긴데, 이건 상상조차가 쉽지 않다. 과거 “The Martyred” 순교자 – “The Innocent,” “Lost Names”의 Richard Eunkook Kim이 있었고, 요 십수년 전 들어서 이창래 교수의 “Native Speaker”가 있었지만, 그야말로 예외적인 경우요, 그러기에 한국인들로서는 그냥 화젯꺼리 이상이 될 수 없었다. 그리고 오래 그냥 잊혀진 영역이었던 차제에, 최복림 작가가 모습을 드러낸 것이다. 그의 고초와 인내가 상상이 가고, 따라서 감탄스럽다. 그리고 부럽다.

오늘, 뉴욕에서의 출판기념회를 몇시간 앞두고 짧은 전화인터뷰를 했다. 복잡한 설명이 필요없고, 작가의 육성을 들어볼 일이다. 출판기념회에 가서 만나도 보고, 후속기사를 올리기로 약속드린다.
